"The eye flashes in a pause (because it has no brain). It has, however, perfect 'knowledge' of the appropriateness of each instance of sleep and of each instance of rising, and of being held from any further rising. This knowledge is not stored up, but how to act is, rather, obvious to the eye at each crossroads.

"Pause: the action of the world on the eye is to print itself there and at the same time to fall away. Eye, remember, neither records, nor can be said to see, the world. It as much 'regards' its environment, the pool building, as a marble regards my regarding it.

"Now we see the sad eye arrived at a central position because the building has compelled it there."
